The arts, in all media, have become increasingly dominated by the market. This has very severe implications both for artists and for society as a whole.
Art, music, theatre, film and writing which challenge the status quo are frequently excluded, ignored, or overwhelmed by the culture of the market. It becomes harder and more expensive to either be an artist or to be engaged in the arts. Tuition fees, cuts to public arts grants and institutions, state interference in cultural institutions are a part of this process.
Art has always been a voice , freedom and genuine democracy and an opponent of social injustice. The Committee hopes to raise that voice as part of our struggle, and to call anti-capitalist artists and collectives together, to analyze culture critically, and to produce work for publication, exhibition or performance.
The Cultural Committee is open to members and supporters of the Workers Assembly.
